From the Niche into the Spotlight – Pathways to Greater Visibility for European Animation
(October 29, 2026, 2:30–3:30 p.m., Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig)
Animated films from U.S.-studios are often far more visible in Europe than European productions. Many outstanding European and German animated features and shorts, however, barely reach a wider audience after their festival premieres. Especially animated features for adults often have no official theatrical distribution, while short films usually are not released in cinemas at all.
The panel therefore addresses the question: Why do we see so little European animation in Germany? Is the limited visibility due to the films themselves and the lack of audience interest – or is it primarily the structures of distribution, funding, marketing and media coverage that make visibility so difficult?
Together, we will discuss the role of film criticism, platforms and algorithms, how existing animation communities can be better reached by these films and what festivals, cinemas, distributors, media and associations can do jointly to make European animation more visible in the long term and bring it out of the niche.
